    1. I ve read a few of these type of adventure lost at sea alone in the far north type of accounts, and this one is unique in that the ice pan Grenfell finds himself adrift on is within sight of land Again, for me, its the things that go on in the person s mind that interest me the most Grenfell is curiously divided On the one hand, he can see the benefit of his own death to the community and is not afraid of the prospect, on the other, he is continually thinking of ways to aid his survival and carr [...]

    2. Wilfred Grenfell was quite the explorer He did a lot of good for the people of Labrador He raised money to supply doctors by giving lectures and showing pictures of what the country looked like Some say he went too far This story in probably one example He shouldn t have gone across the ice as a short cut that late in the season He should have died It was only his good luck that someone saw his bone flag He tied dog bones together to make something higher than his arms to wave so that it could b [...]

    3. 3.5 A short story that depicts a man s near death experience, the harshness of pioneer times, and a first person view into the realities of settlement life An aspect I was not expecting from the story was Grenfell s perception of God As a person not of god, I particularly found Grenfell s portrayal of his faith endearing and familiar Although short, I enjoyed the story All in all it was a quick listen on my drive home from college for spring break, but I found myself listening intently and was q [...]

    4. A quick, touching story about a real life adventure and a man s heartbreaking decision to sacrifice a few members of his beloved dog team in order to save his own life Sad and touching I enjoyed this

    5. I m a bit surprised Lisa has this in her collection It is pretty graphic at times A well written true story I d like to read about Grenfell s life in Newfoundland.

    6. I listened to the abridged audio book version of this book and was not impressed.Even though I have not read Adrift on an Ice Pan in the original it is obvious that much of the story is lost in the one hour long audio version. The reader is taken through the story in far too short a time to appreciate the ordeal the main character endures and I get the impression that many important details are left out.I suppose I shouldn t have expected that much considering how much was taken out, but its amaz [...]

    7. This slim volume was written in 1909, and reflects the interest in exploration and adventure of the time the author, Wilfred Grenfell, was an Oxford educated physician who, like many in the time, felt that he needed to commit himself to good works to have a meaningful life At the time of the adventure, 1903, he was ministering to fisherman on the north coast of Labrador Rushing to the aid of a young patient, he short cuts across a thawing bay, and winds up adrift with his dogs He is rescued by t [...]

    8. I listened to this on a librivox recording Its a rather interesting account of Wilfred Thomason Grenfell s 1892 adventures up in the north seas Grenfell, from England, had gone to Newfoundland and Labrador to observe fisherfolk s lives there, he later assisted in many a humanitarian work in the area.

    9. This book tied in with the Theatre of Fish book that I read last spring True life story Very short bookI think only about 50 60 pages The husband of a friend of mine is from St Anthony s in Newfoundland which is where Grenfell was based He heard I read Theatre of Fish which is all about Nfld and lent this book to me to read Grenfell s first hand account of his adventure.

    10. A very short read, perfect for folks waiting in a airport or some other medium length wait A little tough for dog lovers, though The voice actor s rendition of a Newfoundlander s accent was shockingly accurate and way too close to home, aye.

    11. This was a very interesting story of arctic survival Grenfell was ill prepared when he set out, and his experience at doing what s required yield valuable lessons for today.
