    1. Well This was my first novel Not my first book by any means I d written seven turkeys before this one got into print And now, six years later, I can see that The Well Tempered Clavier has a number of flaws, not least the title, which didn t really work, and the cover, which was dire And if I were writing the book again, there are a number of things that I d do differently But I still like it it still has an energy and it still captures what it s like to fall in love first time round And it s qui [...]

    2. Kim, Coles s narrator, looks back on his Eton days in the early 1980s At the age of seventeen, Kim fell for India James, his beautiful young piano teacher and, somewhat to his surprise, found his affection reciprocated Of course, these are difficult circumstances in which to conduct a relationship anyway, but Kim s eagerness to think the worst does nothing to help The Well Tempered Clavier is a neat portrait of a teenage crush as a whirlwind of uncertainty and possibility, a rush of love or lust [...]

    3. I couldn t really find a way to identify with the main character an Etonian school boy, and later a 30 year old man reflecting on the past in this book, and subsequently failed to really get into it.This was another cheap acquisition from in their New Year sales, primarily because The Woman who Made Men Cry was recommended to me, and it s sort of a sequel to this, so I figured I d read this first.I could have skipped this, without missing anything.Reading time 3 hours, 9 mins

    4. I liked this The subject matter student teacher relationship was artfully dealt with I did sometimes wonder if I d be as sympathetic if it was a male teacher and a female pupil and while I concluded that I probably wouldn t be, it didn t stop me engaging with the story I enjoyed the writing, I enjoyed the references to the music, and I think it did capture the all consumingness of first love.

    5. One of the most romantic books I have ever read, beautifully written and characterised Also, a 1970 s insight into life at Eton, which was interesting
